On Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its second list of 111 candidates in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, which has further escalated the political tussle between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP in all 294 constituencies in the state. This is after the party gave a previous announcement of 144 candidates which gave a signal that BJP was fully prepared to take part in the polls.

The second list has such prominent names as Rekha Patra who will run in Hingalganj (SC), Kalyan Chakraborty at Khardaha and Roopa Ganguly at Sonarpur Dakshin. Other prominent candidates are Nisith Pramanik of Mathabhanga, Shankar Adhikari of Chopra, Koustav Bagchi of Barrackpur and Arup Choudhury of Kamarhati. The BJP has provided another example when it has presented Priyanka Tibrewal, the candidate of Entally constituency and Tapas Roy, the candidate of Maniktala constituency.

In the former list, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari was nominated in Nandigram, where he infamously defeated a TMC chief Mamata Banerjee in 2021, and in Bhabanipur, which is also represented by Banerjee herself. Other contenders were the BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul of Asansol Dakshin, actor-turned-politician Rudranil Ghosh of Shibpur and Bankim Chandra Ghosh of Chakdaha.

The West Bengal Assembly elections will be conducted in two phases where the first phase will have 152 constituencies and the second phase will have 152 constituencies on April 23 and April 29 respectively. Voting will be done on May 4. Election Commission of India (ECI) had fixed the date of the issuance of the gazette notification to March 30, nominations to April 6, scrutiny to April 7, and withdrawal of nominations to April 9. It is a long list and with this extensive list BJP hopes to be able to make its presence felt in the state and give a stiff competition to the ruling TMC party.
