The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) have announced an extension of the deadline for installing water aerators in Bengaluru until April 7. This decision aims to tackle water wastage by making these aerators mandatory in commercial establishments and large communities where water consumption is significant.

Previously, the BWSSB had set March 31 as the deadline for aerator installation, warning of a ₹5,000 fine for non-compliance. These aerators are anticipated to curtail water wastage by up to 60% while ensuring minimal water usage.

Moreover, BWSSB has imposed restrictions on using potable/drinking water for non-essential purposes like car washing, construction, gardening, and recreational activities such as fountains and swimming pools.

Recent reports indicate that 22 families in Bengaluru were fined ₹5,000 each for utilizing Cauvery water, meant for essential needs, for non-essential purposes amidst acute water scarcity. The collective fine amounted to ₹1.1 lakh. BWSSB took action based on complaints received via social media platforms, where individuals were observed misusing drinking water for activities like car washing and gardening.

In response to the water crisis, the government is exploring alternatives like treated water for non-essential tasks, diverting the burden from Cauvery water, which primarily serves drinking purposes. This strategic shift towards treated water usage could alleviate pressure on existing water resources and mitigate the severity of water shortages in the city.

By extending the deadline and enforcing penalties for non-compliance, BWSSB aims to foster responsible water usage practices among residents and businesses alike. This concerted effort towards water conservation reflects the urgency of addressing water scarcity challenges and underscores the importance of collective action in securing sustainable water management solutions for Bengaluru’s future.
