There was a heart-rending tragedy in Bengaluru, two young brothers aged 8 and 6 drowned in one of the lakes at Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah Layout on Thursday evening after they purportedly skipped their tuition lessons in order to play by the water bodies.

Jaganadhan S (8), and Sanjay S (6), were students in their private school in Ullala Upanagar, the victims. The boys are suspected of drowning between 6.30 pm and 7.00 pm, but it was only revealed at around 9:00 pm.

Subramani, their father, who is a mason, had dropped them up at school earlier that day, and their mother, Mamatha, who is a helper in a private firm, was back home working at around 8:15 pm when she discovered her sons at large and in need of. The fact that the young couple was worried when Subramani showed up a few minutes later made them all the more anxious as the tuition teacher informed them that the boys had not been attending school in the past four days.

In a desperate bid to find him, however, one of the friends of Jaganadhan disclosed that he had been playing with the brothers around the lake, which was being maintained by the BBMP, but had left earlier in the night. The parents rushed down to the scene, being afraid that it was the worst, but on reaching there, they found the body of Jaganadhan floating in the water, dead.

Law enforcement was activated, and rescue missions were initiated in order to recover both dead bodies. The police are already investigating how the children entered the lake premises and whether there was any form of security.

The unfortunate death of the two young brothers has taken its toll on the local community, causing yet again the alarm that there is a need to improve the safety and fencing around open water bodies in residential zones.
