The Police Commissioner of Bengaluru received a bomb threat through his official email address, which led to police taking high alert in the city, which caused an automatic security response in key places of people. Reportedly, the email purported to be dispatched by the terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and specifically listed several areas with heavy footfall as possible targets.
The threatening e-mail was dispatched through an address by the name Mohit and it states that there were explosives set up at Kempegowda International Airport and in large shopping centres around the city in locations such as Orion Mall, Lulu Mall, Forum South Mall and Mantri Square Mall by the so-called Jaish-e-Mohammad White Collar Terror Team. It warned of explosions between 7 pm and 9 pm and finished with a chilling sign-off accompanying by religious allusions and glorifying a person known as our master Mohit.
As soon as the message was received, the top police officials convened emergency meetings and put into effect the crisis management measures of the city. The airport and all malls identified in the threat were put on bomb detection and disposal squads (BDDS), anti-terror units, and dog squads. Security guards started large-scale searches and inspected premises, parking lots, underground areas, and exits and entrances searching them with suspicious things.
At the same time, cybercrime experts started to track down the origin of the email so as to ascertain its authenticity and whether it was a real terror threat or hoax to bring about panic. Investigators are looking into server routes, IP addresses, and any digital fingerprint that can be connected to the sender.
According to police sources, although such threats are in most cases only false alarms, they are handled with utmost seriousness considering that the areas cited pose a high-risk level and that the outcome of such an incident may lead to massive deaths.
The government also urged people to be calm yet on the alert that they had adequate security in place.
