The occurrence of a devastating fire in two warehouses close to a Momo factory in Nazirabad in the West Bengal state has caused shock waves within the state and elicited sharp criticism against the Mamata Banerjee-led government by the BJP. The fire which erupted on January 26 is thought to have claimed 27 lives. Law enforcers verified that the human remains found at the location are too charred to be recognised and so can hardly be identified.
Police officers of Baruipur claim that they have taken 27 cases of missing people as complaints filed by the family members of the workers who were present in the warehouses during the fire. An IPS officer said that forensic analysis is being carried out on around 16 samples, such as bones and skulls, among other remains, to verify the number of victims and their identities. DNA testing of blood samples of family members of the missing workers has already been done in an attempt to help in identification.
There have been political outcries over the incident, with top BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari spearheading a mammoth procession of party supporters in Narendrapur, near Kolkata. Adhikari insisted that the owners of the city-based food chain that is associated with the warehouses be arrested immediately. He charged the governing Trinamool Congress with being protective of those involved in the tragedy and being unsensitive to the families of the victims.
Adhikari also criticised the state government in the way they handled the incident by stating that the fire minister arrived at the scene 32 hours after the fire had broken out, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had not visited the scene at all five days after the disaster. He said that the way the issue is being addressed is inhuman and a complication by the ruling party. This fire has cast doubts on the safety levels in the industrial units, and the authorities are still searching and rescuing people from the cause of the fire.
