A terrible event occurred in Durgapur West Bengal where a second-year medical student of 23 years old was gangraped by a group of men as she went out to dine to the outskirts of her college campus on Friday night. The victim, who is a native of Jaleswar in Odisha, had walked out of the privately owned medical college with a male friend at around 8.30 pm to have a regular dinner when the three unknown men are said to have attacked the victim. Her friend was said to have left her alone soon after and at this point the men took her phone and forcefully took her to a nearby jungle where the rape occurred, according to the police.
The accused also forced the victim to pay him or her money in exchange of retrieving her mobile phone and threatened her dire consequences in the event of exposing the case to the authorities, according to the authorities. The woman is now receiving a medical treatment at a nearby hospital and the perpetrators are still at large. Her statement has been captured by the police and it is under investigation.
One of the senior officers mentioned that they are working on retrieving CCTV footage in nearby locations to help the investigation. A forensic team will also visit the site to take more evidence so that all possible leads are followed. The medical college has been asked to give a comprehensive report about the incident to state health department that shows how seriously the authorities are taking the issue.
In the morning, on Saturday, the parents of the victim got into Durgapur since they were notified of the assault by a friend of the daughter. Shocked and anguished in expressing this, the father stated that the family had selected the college due to its good academic history in hopes of a secure and fruitful life in providing medical education to their daughter.
The police are also seeking any witnesses or persons who have details about the incident to come out.
