An Iftaar event organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Poonjeeri, near Mahabalipuram, witnessed a mix of improved planning and lingering crowd management challenges as supporters gathered in large numbers to catch a glimpse of Vijay.
The March 18 event marked TVK’s second major Iftaar gathering, following the chaotic debut held earlier in Chennai’s Royapettah, which had turned into a logistical nightmare for authorities. This time, organisers chose the relatively quiet coastal town of Poonjeeri, hoping the open space and better parking facilities would help manage the influx of fans-turned-cadres.
Efforts were made to maintain discipline, with party leaders instructing attendees to remain seated, respect the occasion, and avoid using mobile phones—many were even asked to leave their devices outside to prevent selfies and videos. These measures largely worked during the prayer session, with the crowd maintaining decorum.
However, as Vijay prepared to leave the venue, the situation quickly became tense. A surge of excitement led to pushing and jostling among attendees trying to get closer to the actor. Similar scenes unfolded in the separate enclosure for women and children, where many rushed toward the barricades for a better view.
Organisers had earlier promised that Vijay would visit the women’s section after prayers to ensure order, but excitement remained difficult to contain. Despite improved arrangements, the event highlighted the continued challenge of managing massive crowds drawn by the actor’s popularity.
