Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has put under arrest one of its police officers and a close kin of the late singer Zubeen Garg in relation to his unexplained death in Singapore last month. Sandipan Garg, who is an imprisoned police officer and is a Deputy Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) in the Kamrup district, is also a cousin of Zubeen Garg. He was arrested following the four-day CID interrogation. The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Kamrup (Metropolitan) district has detained him for seven days of police custody.
Officials said Sandipan was on vacation in Singapore with Zubeen Garg when the 52-year-old singer, composer, poet and filmmaker met his tragic end as a sea swimmer on September 19 during a yacht party. The event occurred when the singer was in Singapore to perform in the North East India Festival (NEIF). His death, which had been initially cited as a case of accidental drowning, was soon handled as a suspicious situation following a number of inconsistencies had been raised in the witness accounts.
The head of the SIT, a special DGP (CID), M.P. Gupta, confirmed the arrest and stated, Today, we have arrested Sandipan after interrogating him. The investigation is a process that is still in progress, and more information cannot be released at this point. He further mentioned that the officer has been taken to court and sent to police custody to be further questioned.
This is the fifth arrest in the case. The CID has previously arrested four other persons, including Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organiser of NEIF; Siddharth Sharma, the manager of Zubeen; the band member, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami; and a singer, Amritprava Mahanta, who are currently in the custody of the CID.
The CID filed a case on sections concerning culpable homicide that did not constitute murder and criminal conspiracy, and death through negligence. The investigators are currently concentrating on recreating the last hours that preceded the death of singer Sandipan, who was arrested.
