Assam Police is yet to get a reply to their request to the Singapore authorities to give information on the murder of famous singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, who died at sea there last month. On Saturday, speaking at a press conference, CID Special Director General of Police Munna Prasad Gupta said they are in the process of doing so, but Singapore has not yet updated them.

The state CID that is spearheading the investigation has resorted to the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) between India and Singapore. They have sought vital evidence, including CCTV footage and other pieces of evidence that pertain to the case, through the Ministry of Home Affairs. This request has been sent to the Office of the Attorney General in Singapore, which is the nodal agency on such issues.

According to Gupta, the request was issued shortly after the investigation process commenced, and it is undergoing consideration by the relevant authorities in Singapore. He explained that no Assam Police team can simply get to Singapore without proper legal clearance, and everything is being done via the official channels.

Although it may take a long time to get information, Gupta claimed that this has not slowed down the investigation in Assam. The case is being actively investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) consisting of 10 members who are still getting information about the case by interviewing persons close to the incident.

The CID has summoned a second round to 11 Assam-origin Singaporeans living aboard the yacht when Zubeen Garg was in her final moments on September 19. It was just one of them that showed up before the SIT within the stipulated deadline on the first summons. The other people have now been advised to be present according to the new deadline.

Gupta has stressed that their testimonies were important when it comes to recounting the events that led to the death of Garg.
