The Assam government is also in the effort of finding an appropriate location within and around Guwahati where iconic singer Zubeen Garg should be cremated, state minister Ranoj Pegu announced on Sunday. He added the options that are shortlisted will be given to the family of the late artist, who will then decide on the venue.

One of the potential sites of sonar, according to Pegu, has already been inspected by the officials at Sonapur, which is situated at the outskirts of Guwahati. There were discussions the day before on whether Sonapur would be a possible location. “We too have other options, which are under serious consideration,” the minister said to the reporters on an inspection.

“The cremation is not the only thing that the government is putting in mind, but building a memorial to the beloved cultural icon at the chosen site. The decision on where the family will be located has been made, and the location will be officially announced once the state cabinet meeting this evening,” Pegu said.

Though some quarters have called a final resting place at Jorhat, the Upper Assam town where Garg spent his childhood, and that is commonly considered to be the cradle of his creativity, family sources have pointed out that Guwahati or its suburbs can eventually be decided upon. It is probable that the opinion will be affected by the fact that the octogenarian father of Garg might not be able to travel to Jorhat, which is more than 300 km away.

The mortal remains of the singer were brought to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi at around midnight on Saturday of the last week through Singapore, where he had fatally met his death on Friday when he went swimming in the sea. The body was received by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was escorted by Minister of State of External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and other Assam officials, and floral tributes were paid.
