According to an official order, the Assam government has declared the establishment of a one-member judicial commission to probe into the death of popular singer-composer Zubeen Garg. The commission will be headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, and is likely to report its findings within six months, the order issued by the Political Department said. The Chief Minister Office announced about it on X towards the end of the week on Friday.
The judicial commission has been assigned the role of investigating the facts and circumstances of the death of Garg who was killed in Singapore on September 19. Garg, a famous personality in the Northeast of the music and culture industry of the country, died allegedly when swimming in the sea during a visit to the Southeast Asian country to invite the 4th edition of the NorthEast India Festival organized by Shyamkanu Mahanta and his team.
As per the order, the commission will investigate whether there were any lapses, acts of omission or commission or negligence by any person, authority or institution that could relate to the death of Garg. Moreover, the panel must determine whether other forces such as the probability of foul play, plotting or illegitimate actions were involved or had any connection with the incident.
Assam CID has its parallel investigation into the death of the singer at hand. The state has filed over 60 FIRs against festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg manager Siddharth Sharma and band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta. They have all been arrested and taken into 14 days of police remand.
The establishment of the judicial commission shows the willingness of the Assam government to see to it that an extensive and transparent investigation on the mysterious surrounding the death of one of the most popular artists in the region takes place.
