Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said on Wednesday that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is committed to restoring the elected government in the state, which has been under President’s Rule since February 13. Addressing the media at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal, Singh disclosed that he and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba recently had some important meetings with the top central leaders, including Shah, to apprise them of the ongoing situation in Manipur.
Singh said that they have briefed the Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the ground situation in the state; he described two meetings, one on late Monday night, 11 PM to 1 AM, and another on Tuesday afternoon, 3.15 PM to 4 PM. In the talks, the delegation provided an extensive report on the existing public unrest, ongoing blockades, and unabated communal tensions.
Singh said that Amit Shah is actively speaking to different communities to resolve the crisis. Our problems are now more complicated and sensitive than ever before, and the tension has increased to a community level, the former CM observed. He added that Shah has called on all communities to ensure that there is peace and unity, a factor he termed as crucial in development and the solution.
Singh quoted Shah as saying that the central government is fully committed to maintaining the territorial integrity of Manipur and the restoration of normalcy. Singh continued, “He has given us some basic responsibilities on the groundwork which cannot be made public at this moment.” He urged the civil society organizations, elected MLAs, and the people to be united in order to end the prevailing violence.
In addition, the delegation sought a 30-day extension to implement the identification of the undocumented migrants in the state.
The Governor of Manipur recommended that the President impose President’s Rule in the state after Biren Singh resigned as the CM, amidst the increasing cases of violence and political instability.
