Kolkata: On Saturday, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury wrote a letter to President Droupadi Murmu appealing her action to curb what he called an “anarchic situation” in Bengal. Chowdhury, being the president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress committee, urged action to recover civility and law and order situations in West Bengal, which is ruled by Trinamool Congress (TMC), a major partner of the INDIA bloc.

They have noted approaches in relation to violence and the alleged mistreatment of opposition party workers, as pointed out by Adhir Chowdhury in his letter. Mamata Banerjee and the TMC, he said, were indulging in “strong-handed” methods and “terror-filled attacks” against individuals or groups who were in any way opposed to their rule. Chowdhury has listed such tactics to have had negative impacts on its supporters in terms of loss of lives, unfair detention, and Economic Struggle.

The Congress leader also pointed at some events of the recent past, including the ‘Sandeshkali incident’ and ‘engineered communal riots’ in the Murshidabad district. He said these events were intentionally staged to manipulate the voters in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Chowdhury pointed out that these actions not only cost many lives but also caused many people to lose their sources of income.

Accusing the West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee of shielding and supporting the ruling party ‘goons’ Chowdhury in his appeal, also admitted a personal concern over the deteriorating situation in West Bengal and appealed to the President to take immediate measures to regain law and order and democratic principles in the state. He focused on the fact that the situation in the state is now characterized by unrest and violence against the members of the opposition, which indicates the necessity of an active intervention.
