The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already published the first list of 14 candidates to the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. It has been announced hours ahead of the process of Election Commission declaring the entire Assam election schedule alongside the West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Puducherry on Sunday afternoon.

The list contains those who are running in various constituencies in the state like Naoboicha, Dergaon and Gohpur. The announcement is the official starting point of the preparations of AAP to hold the most important state polls as well as to increase its political presence in Assam.

In the lead up of the elections, the revision of voter list in the four states and one union territory has already been finalized and the final electoral rolls have already been published. This is one of the preparations of the Election Commission so that it will be fair and transparent polling.

In Assam, ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is seeking to have a third stint in the government. It has already commenced its outreach campaign with the party having held the Jan Ashirwad Yatra where Sarma indicated that he has covered approximately 1,200km and had spent approximately 14 hours daily on the road with the people in the first phase.

Meanwhile, the Congress party too has increased its election campaign. It posted its second list of 23 candidates on Saturday, making its total number of announced candidates 65, out of 126 in the Assam Assembly. The party has allowed its alliance partners to take up about 15 constituencies.

During the 2021 Assembly elections, the NDA alliance, consisting of BJP, AGP and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), won 75 seats with BJP being the biggest party with 60 seats. The percentage of voter turnout in that election was a great 86.2 percent, indicating a high participation of the people in the democratic process.
