Seven individuals, including three women, were apprehended following an assault on a 38-year-old Nepali woman in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, with the mob accusing her of child abduction. During the attack, police officers attempting to intervene were also assaulted, resulting in injuries to three officers, one of whom was critically wounded and hospitalized at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).
The Nepali victim, identified as Kamala Dahal, had traveled from Nepal to visit her younger sister in Haflong, Assam. She was assaulted after offering chocolates to a child she encountered during an evening stroll in Lower Haflong. Eyewitnesses reported suspicion arising when Dahal tried to give money to the child after initially offering chocolates and fruit juice.
Subsequently, Dahal received medical treatment at Haflong Civil Hospital. Her family complained to Haflong Police Station, leading to the arrest of seven individuals: Priya Naiding, Rami Hojai, Nipo Jidung, Sonima Sengyung, Projen Kemprai, Dourmoni Langthasa, and Baoringdao Longmailai, all residents of Haflong and its vicinity.
The accused face charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including unlawful assembly, criminal force against a woman, attempt to murder, and causing grievous hurt. Furthermore, charges related to obstructing public servants from performing their duties, assaulting on-duty public servants, causing hurt to on-duty public servants, and damaging public property were also levied.
The Superintendent of Police (SP), Dima Hasao, Mayank Kumar, highlighted that this incident is not isolated, citing a similar case in the district last year. He emphasized the importance of caution against rumors, especially concerning individuals with autism or other conditions, to prevent unwarranted acts of violence.
The police investigation underscores the severity of the assault and the necessity for vigilance in combating misinformation and safeguarding innocent individuals from harm.
