As of May 2025, the police records in Mizoram show 460 foreign nationals, including 439 Myanmar citizens, have been arrested for different crimes in the past five years. Of the other foreign nationals, there are 18 of Bangladesh nationality and three of other nationalities. The persons arrested included those involved in drug trafficking and arms trafficking, as well as child sexual abuse, forgery, burglary and theft of property and visa violations.
The state police also captured narcotic substances worth 770.95 crores, such as heroin, methamphetamine, crystal meth, and ganja, during the same time. The greatest number of foreign nationals was arrested in the year 2022, with 124 of their arrests related to the military coup in Myanmar, which is the most probable factor enhancing cross-border crime. This is followed by the other 106 in 2023, 89 in 2024 and 57 as of 2025 (53 Myanmarese nationals).
Over the same time, Mizoram police have arrested 15,673 people, of which 14,432 are locals and 781 are residents of other Indian states, in different criminal cases. A total of 1666 were booked under the possession of narcotic substances, and 254 were booked under the Arms and Explosive Substances Act. Theft was at the lead with 5,495 cases filed and 3,704 arrests made as compared to burglary with cases of 4,686 and 2,917 arrests made.
Moreover, 1,694 people were taken into custody with regard to the Mizoram Liquor Act, which does not officially allow the manufacture, sale, and consumption of any liquor in the state. The statistics highlight the actions taken by the state police to equally address terrorism in the area alongside intrastate and transnational crimes, drug trafficking, and organised crime. It also brings out the need to maintain law and order in Mizoram, as there is a need to ensure that the law and order prevail in Mizoram due to its geographical location, owing to its borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, which can readily encourage transnational criminal activities.
