The magnitude of 4.1 Richter scale is an earthquake that shook the Karbi Anglong district in Assam on Tuesday morning. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported the earthquake at 9:22 AM IST. Its epicentre was on the latitude 26.51 °N and the longitude 93.15 °E at a depth of 25 kilometres in the mantle of the Earth.
The tremor was not very strong, but was even felt by other residents in the surrounding regions. No casualties or serious injuries: so far, no reports about the victims have been reported, and no serious structural damage has been reported. The quake, however, led to panic among the locals, albeit momentarily, as some residents left their homes and places of work as a precautionary measure.
The authorities have issued guarantees that they are keeping a close check on the situation and would act in case there are any aftershocks. In addition, code officials at the district administration have been encouraging people to be vigilant but calm, most especially, people living in old buildings or those that have been ill constructed.
This earthquake is in line with the recent earthquakes experienced in the area. On Monday, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake was registered in the Andaman Sea with a depth of 10 kilometres. Interestingly, on Sunday, another earthquake of the same magnitude and depth went off in the same region, indicating the continuous seismic activity in other regions of the country.
Assam is located in a seismic zone halfway through zone V, the highest seismic region in India. Preparedness and timely information are very important, given that low magnitude and moderate earthquakes are common in the region.
These seismic patterns are still under research by experts to gain a better profile of this tectonic movement in the country as well as develop early warning systems to reduce the risk in future.
