In a shocking case in Telangana, animal rights activists have also claimed that about 300 stray dogs were killed in Jagtial district making the overall number of such killings in the state about 900 in the past few weeks. The most recent instance has been met with fury with claims suggesting the intervention of local elected officials who were accused to have done so in accordance to the promises they had made during gram panchayat elections which was conducted in December last year in order to reduce the stray dog population.

The incidence was reported to have taken place in Pegadapally village in which a complain was lodged that reported that approximately 300 stray dogs have been killed by injecting poison on January 22. The case had alleged the village Sarpanch and the secretary of Gram panchayat to have plotted the killings stating that the Sarpanch had contracted people to execute the murder.

Based on the complaint, the police filed a First Information Report (FIR) against both officials on the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Prevention of Cruelty to animals Act. To verify the development, Inspector Ch. Kiran, said that in one of the inquest, police unearthed about 70 to 80 dog carcasses in a suspected burial site in the village. The discovery of the burial date indicates that it had occurred three to four days before the discovery.

Nevertheless, the police indicated that the investigation is in early stages. At this stage we are not yet in a position to be certain about whether the accused are involved or not, said the inspector, and post-mortem examinations are yet to be received, and more investigations are being conducted.

This incident may be regarded as a worrying trend, since several alleged cases of stray dog killings were reported in Telangana alone in January. Animal rights groups also referred to a different incident in January 19 at Yacharam village near Hyderabad, where it was alleged that some 100 dogs had been poisoned, though not all the carcasses were found at the time.
