Chikkamagaluru: Officials reported on Friday that thirty monkeys were found dead for unknown reasons, including four babies in the Koppa division of Chikkamagaluru district. An initial inquiry pointed to what the alleged was poisoning the monkeys with some poisonous substance before killing them through flogging, as disclosed by a senior forest officer. As to the precise circumstances of his demise, an investigation of the case and an autopsy will elucidate details of that nature.
The conclusions of the forensic examination, which has not yet been completed, include: ‘We assume that the monkeys ate some toxic substance, they were rendered unconscious, beaten with the aim at causing maximum damage and subsequently killed, and an unknown vehicle was used to transport the bodies which were then dumped in the forest’. It was on Friday afternoons by one of the forest department staff while in the forest cover.
A complaint has been lodged by the concerned forest officer, who has now proceeded to take the offended legal action under the Wildlife Protection Act. Autopsies are yet to be conducted, and efforts are hastily made to determine the village where the incident took place. The officer concluded, ‘And those people who have been involved in this evil act will be apprehended and brought to book.’
It is feared by the wildlife authorities and local people that something has to be done immediately to apprehend the attacker and prevent future attacks on women in the area. The use of animals in this cruel manner is considered to be unlawful, but on the same note these activities are likely to jeopardize the balance of the ecosystem in the region.
Wildlife protection laws exist to protect endangered species and keep the balance of the ecosystem. This makes it crucial that there are organizations that are very keen on enforcing these laws, as well as surveillance forces that are always on the lookout for these wildlife resources. While investigations go on, it is important to guarantee the enhancement of justice for victims as well as maintain and impose the ideals of wildlife conservation.
