Gujarat Giants to play Mumbai India in the inaugural season of Women’s Premier League on March 4th. The maiden match of the WPL would be played at the DY Pati Stadium, Mumbai, the BCCI announced on Tuesday. Up next would be the RCB against Delhi Capitols at Brabourne CCI.
In its first season, the Women’s Premier League will stage a total of 20 league matches and 2 Playoff games that will be played in a duration of 23 days.
The five teams in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 assembled their squads for the inaugural edition of the tournament on Monday. The eliminator round would be played on 24th March at DY Patil Stadium with finals scheduled at Brabourne on 26th March.
10 rounds of the auction took place followed by three rounds of the accelerated auction took place at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, UP Warriors and Gujarat Giants were the teams who took part in the auction.
Out of the 448 players who were auctioned, 87 were sold out and as many as 59.5 crore were shelled out. While 30 players were overseas, 47 Indians found teams.
Harmanpreet Kaur became the first player to be auctioned in the history of the championship. The Indian skipper went to the Mumbai Indians for a price of INR 1.80 crores. Among foreigners, England all-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt bagged 3.20 crores from the auction. The Australians also hogged the limelight. Smriti Mandhana became the most expensive player after being bought for INR 3.40 crore by RCB
