The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist added the 4th medal to her kitty defeating Australia’s Caitlin Anne Parker with a 5-2 split-decision win. At the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in New Delhi on Sunday, Lovlina produced a strong show in the 70-75kg finals. This is Borgohain’s first gold at the competition after settling for bronze in the 2018 and 2019 editions.
After winning the bronze medal in Tokyo, Lovlina didn’t have the best in 2022, where she failed to make a mark both at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. However, she produced a strong show at the nationals and also bagged a gold medal at the Asian Boxing Championship in November last year.
Earlier, star pugilist Nikhat Zareen continued to reign over the world as the 26-year-old won her second successive World title in the Boxing Championships. Zareen thrashed Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam by a unanimous 5-0 verdict in the 50kg summit clash. Zareen joined the elite list featuring legendary pugilist Mary Kom. Zareen is only the second Indian after Kom to win World Championships two times in her career.
This was Nikhat’s second Worlds gold after winning gold in the 52kg category in 2022. Meanwhile, Tham’s silver was Vietnam’s best finish in Boxing World Championships history.
Earlier, on Saturday, Nitu Ghanghas was crowned world champion after she beat Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg in the final of the 45-48kg minimum weight category. Saweety Boora was also crowned world champion after she beat Wang Lina of China in the 75-81 kg light heavyweight category. That was India’s first-ever gold in the world in the light heavyweight category.
