Virender Sehwag, the former India opener has raised a big question on the prospects of Pakistan to go through to the semifinals to the T20 World Cup 2026 by saying straight out that he does not think they have the capacity to make it to the semifinals.
Pakistan, under Salman Ali Agha are still mathematically in contention especially with the Super 8 win over New Zealand in Colombo by England. But their grossly low net run rate in comparison to the Black Caps has placed them in a situation where they are in need of a near-miraculous effort in their last encounter with the Sri Lankans.
To have a progressive Pakistan, a mere victory might not be enough. Assuming they hit first and they score 160, then they would require at least 65 to beat New Zealand on net run rate. In case of pursuing the same aggregate, they should restructure the target in 13.2 overs -a very steep and very demanding formula in life and death situations.
In one of the meetings, Sehwag ruled out the qualification chances of Pakistan in a typical fashion. He was provided with the batting-first scenario where he answered, it will not happen. When he heard the equation of the chase, he again expressed his scepticism, and stated that the undertaking was just as unrealistic.
Sehwag also added that Pakistan can have been lucky to have England winning over New Zealand but it will not be wise to count on luck to win the game again. In his view, in the stage of qualification, one has to prevail in the field rather than rely on good performances in other fields and he feels that Pakistan has not been able to portray this regularly at the tournament.
