Virat Kohli, legendary Indian cricketer and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star, has made his first formal public statement 91 days after a celebratory event in Bengaluru became a tragedy. The stampede leading to the death of 11 people and dozens injured occurred during IPL victory celebrations of RCB in the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. Kohli referred to the event as a shattering event that turned happiness into inconceivable grief.
Although Virat Kohli already posted the official statement of RCB on his social media accounts the day after the incident, this is the first time he has spoken in such depth and directly about the seriousness of the tragedy. His words are timely when questions continue to cast a large shadow over the organisation and implementation of the celebrations. Inquiries found that RCB was not given the required licenses to hold such a massive event, which attracted lakhs of fans when the open invitations were shared on social media. The stampede was caused by the large crowds of people that overwhelmed the police forces, who were struggling to keep the crowd at bay.
Following the incident, RCB has introduced a new program called “RCB Cares” with the aim of enhancing the safety of fans and adopting sustainable crowd control measures. Within the framework of this program, the franchise has committed 25 lakh as compensation to every family that lost a loved one. But Kohli and the leadership underlined that the effort is not just about the financial aspect but also respecting and protecting their enthusiastic fan base, which they refer to as the 12th Man Army.
In the project, it will partner with the Indian Premier League and the Karnataka State Cricket Association to help enhance the crowd management system. The program will be a staple of the future operation of RCB once it receives approval from the government.
