Virat Kohli made an impressive showing during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s match against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur this week. Full of excitement, highly involved and fired up, Kohli marked every Punjab wicket as if it were a World Cup match. That was vintage Kohli: passion, intensity and fearlessness. For some fans, this performance left them feeling a bit sad. Why? He’ll never be quite as energising as he was in Test cricket again.

Kohli’s departure from Test cricket is still hard to believe, even with a bit more time having passed since he announced it. As just one match remains in this IPL season, people realise there’s still over a month until Kohli can appear in India’s white-ball matches in Australia. India and countless cricket fans will miss Sehwag’s presence in Test cricket.

Clearly, watching the RCB vs PBKS game revealed the reason for his decision to retire. Kohli, having smashed a boundary with his first ball, was given out as he edged one from Josh Hazlewood outside off-stump. This is a problem that has always dogged him in the Tests, mostly when he is playing abroad.

As per sources, on April 2nd, Kohli confirmed to both the BCCI and Ajit Agarkar that he wanted to retire from Tests. While some questioned the choice because he has been so successful as captain, the team may have decided Kohli needed a break because he often struggled technically, and it had become draining for him.

Many fans were let down when Virat Kohli failed again on the same type of ball in shorter cricket, confirming one reason for his departure from Tests.
