Vinesh Phogat, an Indian wrestler, filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following her disqualification from the Olympic 50 kg final in Paris. Following her disqualification for exceeding the weight limit, Phogat was scheduled to face American Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for the gold medal.
Following her semi-final match, Phogat went over the weight limit by 2.7 kg, and on Wednesday she was disqualified. Chief Medical Officer Dinshaw Pardiwala of the Indian Olympic team said she tried dieting but didn’t get rid of the weight.
A representative of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed Phogat’s appeal to CAS, requesting the silver medal. “Vinesh Phogat asked for the silver medal in an appeal against her disqualification to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). According to media reports citing sources, “CAS will deliver its verdict tomorrow morning.”
Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba was defeated by Phogat 5-0 in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. President PT Usha of the Indian Olympic Association has expressed shock and disappointment over the disqualification.
“I am disappointed and shocked to learn that Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified. I had come here to meet Vinesh, who is in good health both physically and medically. But medically, she is disappointed. Our support team is with her, making every effort to assist her in losing weight,” Usha remarked.
