Tokyo: A typhoon namely, “Typhoon Mirinae” is expected to approach Tokyo and its neighbouring areas from the Pacific on Sunday, the final day of the Tokyo Olympics, and could bring heavy rain mainly to the Pacific side of the country, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.
The typhoon is expected to make landfall at Tokyo on the last day of the Summer Olympics 2020 on Sunday.
The centre of the typhoon is expected to be located some 70 kilometers south of Hachijojima, an island south of Tokyo, at 12 a.m. on Aug. 8, and about 160 kilometers southeast of the coastal city of Choshi in the eastern Japan prefecture of Chiba at 12 p.m. that day.
The closing ceremony of the Olympics is scheduled to take place at 8:00 pm (local time) on Sunday. The final day would conclude the Olympics with track and field, volleyball, water polo, boxing, handball and basketball events.
The official handover ceremony between Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 would be the key highlights of the last day. The Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, will hand the Olympic flag to the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo.
Earlier, a separate typhoon, Nepartak slammed Japan prompting rescheduling of certain rowing and archery events.
