Sports: The Tokyo Olympic organizers on Thursday reported 24 infections among Games participants, the highest so far. After the recent infections, the tally has risen to 193, out of which three foreign athletes have been identified.
On Wednesday, Japan reported 9,583 cases nationwide, the first time the figure has topped 9,000, with cases also at a record level in Tokyo. Apart from 3 foreign athletes, 15 contractors and six games linked officials are identified positive for the virus.
So far, two people associated with the Games have been hospitalized. As per the country health department data, the positivity rate stands at 0.02 per cent. Of the total Olympic participants reported positive, 109 have been identified as residents of Japan while the rest have been identified as overseas participants.
Tokyo is already under a virus state of emergency that shortens restaurant and bar opening hours and restricts them from selling alcohol. Strict measures have been imposed for the Games, including a ban on spectators at almost all events and regular testing for Olympic participants.
According to the figures registered under WHO, the 2020 Summer Olympics host recorded 882,823 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 15,151 deaths. As of 25 July 2021, a total of 79,383,659 vaccine doses have been administered.
