While Friday’s IPL 2024 fixtures between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings are not the headlines of the season, both teams have to put in extra effort to regain broken momentum given the mixed starts to their campaigns. As the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (sitting third with four points from three matches) meet Sunrisers Hyderabad (with their seventh, two points apiece in three matches) the stakes for both sides couldn’t be any higher.
This season was characterized by changed leadership both on opposing sides. Pat Cummins, the Aussie fast genius, was bought by SRH and trust into the role of captaincy. But then again, MS Dhoni made a favorable decision, about handing over the authority to Ruturaj Gaikwad, before the commencement of the seasons opener owned by CSK. That variance has unlocked the latent leadership skills of Gaikwad, who being mentored by Dhoni is able to give lessons to the young talent.
A lot of expectations are on the shoulders of Mayank Agarwal, the senior Indian batsman from SRH, as he has not found form but still remain an unknown factor in the tournament. Daniel Vettori, among the coaching staff, has verbally advertised for Agarwal, emphasizing the significance of easing the pressure off from the batsmen allowing them to express themselves but also countering opposition tactics.
CSK, on the other hand, will be banking on Matheesha Pathirana to deliver a standout performance. The Sri Lankan bowler has been a formidable force since IPL 2023, particularly lethal at the death overs. Gaikwad’s ability to read the conditions accurately will be crucial for CSK, especially after their recent defeat against DC. Additionally, they must be wary of Heinrich Klaasen, SRH’s dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman who has a formidable record against spinners and boasts impressive stats, particularly in Hyderabad.
