Dominating would be the only one-word description of how Virat Kohli played in the three-match ODI series involving South Africa. Kohli, who was scoring 302 runs in three memorable innings at an impressive strike rate (with two towering centuries) demonstrated a new, developed version of the ODI giant he has never ceased being. It was his first foreign appearance on Indian soil in ten months, but he batted like one whose usual home had never been visited.
Having reached 84 international centuries in all, 53 in ODIs alone, Kohli is now again demonstrating why the 50-over game is the game to his talent. The star batter having taken a break in T20Is and Tests, now aims at playing ODI cricket over the years, thus having all the time to propel himself towards the giant mark of 100 international hundreds. This would require a long-lasting performance, and one Indian legend is convinced that the goal can be reached.
In an interview on the JioHotstar, Sunil Gavaskar was very optimistic that Kohli would replicate Sachin Tendulkar in reaching 100 international centuries. “Why not?” Gavaskar said. He has to just get 16 more hundreds, should he continue playing three more years. It is quite possible with the manner in which he is batting in a three-match series of two centuries. In the next few matches against New Zealand, he will have 87 already provided that he will get a couple there. The chances are very good.”
The way that Kohli played during the series made the fans remember his early career explosive self -the one who could demolish bowlers with just the first ball thrown and then dictate the rate of the match with ease. With two consecutive tons in Ranchi and Raipur, Kohli seemed to be even more lethal in Vizag, destroying three six and six fours in his unbeaten 65 which took India to victory.
