ST. LOUIS – Indian grandmaster D. Gukesh has made a strong recovery at the prestigious Sinquefield Cup, currently holding a joint-second position with a score of 1.5 points. He won the World Championship title last year in December, defeating Ding Liren in Singapore.

The young chess prodigy shares the spot with a formidable group of top-tier players, including Alireza Firouzja, Wesley So, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Sam Sevian, showcasing his competitive spirit and resilience in one of the world’s most elite chess tournaments.

What Happened At St. Louis

India Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa started his Sinquefield Cup campaign with a win as he defeated World Champion D Gukesh in St. Louis. The victory briefly lifted R Praggnanandhaa to World no.3 in the LIVE Fide Rankings – which proved to be a big achievement.

Gukesh came with an interesting idea in the Open Spanish, 11.Bc2, which is not a new move but a rare one. As GM Peter Svidler explained on the broadcast, Black usually has a bishop developed on e7 in this position but, in this case, gained a free move to do something else. Abdusattorov naturally placed his queen on d5 with the intention of castling long.

The Sinquefield Cup features a lineup of some of the best players in the world, and every point is fiercely contested. For Gukesh to be among the leaders at this stage speaks volumes about his form and preparation. As the tournament progresses, the competition is expected to intensify, with each player vying for a coveted spot at the top. Gukesh’s performance will be a key focus for fans and analysts alike, as he continues to navigate this challenging field and cement his place among the chess elite. The coming rounds will determine if he can maintain his standing and push for a higher finish.
