Two-time Olympic Medallist PV Sindhu will not compete in the Badminton World Championships set to begin from 22 August in Tokyo, an official from the Badminton Association India said.

The 27-year-old Hyderabadi picked up the injury on her left knee during the recently concluded 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham, the official added giving clarity on the reasons to miss the event. The injury of the ace shuttler comes as a setback to the Indian team that will compete later this month. However, former World No 1 would compete in the women’s single in the upcoming event. It will be a return of sorts for the current World No 28, having missed the 2022 CWG.

Sindhu was one of the flag bearers of the Indian contingent and helped India secure the fourth position in the medals tally. Her first was gold in women’s single and the second was sparkling silver for the team clinched at the mixed event.
