Shubman Gill has at last commented on the relationship he shares with Rohit Sharma, following the announcement of his ODI captaincy for India for the three-match series in Australia. After the latter was appointed captain instead of Rohit, following considerable speculation within fan and media circles about whether Rohit would feel slighted while captain of the side, and if it would affect his relationship with the 26-year-old batter. Gill stated in preparation for the first ODI in Perth that his relationship with the senior players, Rohit and Virat Kohli, is the same as it has always been.
Gill stated that, despite what gets written in the papers, the reality of the matter is much different. “Both as genuine seniors they are very approachable, and very generous in sharing their insights and experiences. Whatever the narrative is out there, we are the same static relationship. Just like before. He [Rohit] is very helpful and is always sharing his experiences,” Gill said. “I actually ask him a lot for suggestions. I ask him; what would you have done on this wicket if you were the captain? And he gives me great suggestions.”
The young captain, who has already shown signs of success in Tests, is looking forward to getting the opportunity and impression of leading a national team in ODIs along with a continued, vibrant relationship with the players.
