Rohit Sharma, the ODI captain of India, was not dismissed without any prior notice to say the least, seeing that he had contributed towards a triumphant team in his last term as a captain in the champions trophy. The decision to make such a high profile change involved deliberation of the Indian selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar in association with head coach Gautam Gambhir, and other decision makers at BCCI, bringing Shubman Gill as the new skipper. Weighing the consequences was something the committee took into consideration as Rohit had a big stature and success in the 50 over format.

Shubman Gill, the person who has also been dominating India in the test cricket, has shown that he had foreseen the development much before it was seen publicly. He received news of his appointment as the new ODI captain of India just prior to the first Test match with the West Indies though the news was announced only after India had crushed the opposition in just two and half days. Gill who is 25 years old will assume control of the Indian ODI team starting with the series against Australia later this month.

“Yes, it was announced during a Test match, but I learned a little earlier, before the second test at New Delhi,” Gill said. “It should be an enormous burden and a greater honour. I am extremely delighted to be in charge of my country on this format.”

Gill also recounted the last few months as a tornado of experiences and opportunities but noted that he is always concentrated about the future. “The past couple of months have been quite hectic, on my part. But the future is what I am really looking forward. I do not want to be distracted by the previous successes and even what we as a team have achieved. Now it is time to prepare and play in every future match,” he said.
