ODI vice-captain of India Shreyas Iyer has also flown home in Australia and is now under medical attention as he moves on with his recovery process following a severe on field injury. Although there have been promising reports of a positive change, members of the Board of Control in the state of Cricket in India (BCCI) have reported that Iyer is not likely to play in the three match ODI series against South Africa, starting November 30.
Reportedly, Shreyas Iyer was much worse than what was thought to have been the case. At one point, his oxygen level is said to have gone down to 50 due to the incident and he can even stand only to take almost ten minutes. A total blackout surrounded him and he took longer time before his consciousness and stability was restored, a BCCI source uncovered.
The accident happened on the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25, 2025. Iyer was bluntly hit on the abdomen as he tried to dismiss Alex Carey by catching him in a diving motion. Later the BCCI proved that the man had a laceration in his spleen, which caused internal bloodshed. The wound was quickly diagnosed and the hemorrhage was immediately prevented accordingly subjected to a minor operation. The board has since announced that he is receiving proper medical treatment.
The Mumbai batsman was released out of the hospital last week and went back to India where he was undergoing more recovery and rehabilitation. Physicians have recommended a minimum of one month to rest before he can go back to full training.
One of the senior BCCI officials stated that the selection committee is not in a hurry to get Iyer back. The first priorities are his long-term health and fitness. He will also require proper time to be fully recovered before he can be allowed back into the squad.
Iyer will be a blow to Team India with the South Africa series being near by, although the management should be planning to rest him so as to make sure he is fit in the future.
