The Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer was taken to Sydney and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after sustaining internal bleeding and a cut to his spleen during the third ODI with Australia. The accident happened when Iyer made a spectacular catch to send Alex Carey packing by running backwards in the field. He however seemed to land clumsily as he completed the catch and hit his left rib cage.

Iyer was supposed to have felt terrible discomfort and pain in his lower ribs after revisiting the dressing room; the medical personnel of the team took him to a nearby hospital and he was immediately attended to. The medical tests later showed that he suffered a lacerated wound on his spleen which caused internal bleeding and he was taken to the ICU where he was put under close supervision and treatment.

According to the official statement, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed the type of injury Iyer suffered and assured the fans that his condition is stable and that he is recovering in the care of the experts. An impact injury to Shreyas Iyer on his left lower rib cage area occurred on fielding in the 3 rd ODI with Australia in Sydney on 25 th October 2025. The scans have shown a spleen laceration injury. The BCCI said he was under treatment, medically stable and recovering.

The statement also said that his recovery is also being closely monitored by the BCCI Medical Team who is working in cooperation with specialists in Sydney and India. The Indian Team Doctor will be staying in Sydney to monitor the daily progress of Iyer and give him proper care.

Although Iyer is supposed to spend a few days under observation, it is not clear whether he will play in the following matches or not. The whole fraternity of the game of cricket and the fans are seen to have offered prayers and support towards his quick recovery.
