The BCCI has appointed right-handed batsman Shreyas Iyer as the captain of the India A cricket team in the two upcoming multi-day matches against Australia A, it announced on Saturday. This management position follows soon after Iyer was surprised to have been left out of India’s Asia Cup team, despite his stunning scores of late. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Punjab Kings captain now gets a chance to demonstrate his leadership and strengthen his claim to greater heights.
Shreyas scored more than 600 runs at a 175-strike rate in the IPL, helping Punjab Kings to their maiden final in 11 years. The decision to leave him out of the Asia Cup elicited a lot of criticism against the selection committee, which was led by Ajit Agarkar, considering he was in good form. The new leadership project in India A will enable Shreyas to get moving again and stay at the center of attention of the selectors.
Shreyas has been reportedly being considered as the next ODI captain of India after Rohit Sharma but some sources have suggested that Shubman Gill is also in the fray. India A vs Australia A would therefore be a very huge stepping stone in the career of Iyer as a leader and a player in general as he has not been playing with the Indian test team since 2024. Well played performances in these matches may boost his prospects of being included in future Test series at home against West Indies and South Africa.
Moreover, KL Rahul and Mohammed Siraj will be included in the India A team at the second match in place of two other players. The two players who had been rested since the five match series with England had been a drawn affair will now have a chance to re-establish a match rhythm before India opens its home season on October 2. BCCI is yet to unveil additional information concerning the squads and selections are still under wraps.
