The recent sanction issued by FIFA against India has been sharply reacted by Indian footballers and the centre. Former captain and one of the most prolific personalities in the country- Bhaichung Bhatia has called the ban very harsh and an unfortunate decision by the top football body. “It’s very important that all the stakeholders come together and get the system right and everybody works for the betterment of Indian football,” he added.

Sunil Chettri, Indian soccer team captain said, “People who are involved are doing their best to make sure that we are going to come out with the best results possible. Everyone is working hard towards it. As far as players are concerned we are going to make sure that we do our work properly.”

Meanwhile, the Centre sought an urgent hearing in SC on the All India Football Federation matter in the wake of the FIFA decision. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and AS Bopanna was told by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, that an “important development” has taken place and FIFA has sent a letter suspending India which is in the public domain and needs to be brought on record. The matter is scheduled for Wednesday, as said by the bench.

Violation of FIFA Statutes was cited as the reason, as the body claims to have identified a third-party influence. The decision by the world governing body has jeopardized the country’s staging of the U-17 Women’s World Cup in October.
