Rajasthan Royals (RR) have put themselves on the precipice, with their backs against the wall in their clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. RR got what will be a gut-wrenching Super Over defeat to their name in Delhi after losing three on the trot, withering their promising start to the season, and denting seriously their playoff hopes. Having lost just twice in the first half, the Royals now need a freak unto perfection upon which to build from here.
Many cracks were exposed in both their bowling and batting by their latest defeat. Things did not go according to plan on death bowling as Delhi Capitals were allowed to score 77 runs in the last five overs, but their chase after being in control did not stand the test of pressure. Questions now hang heavy over their judgment in such moments, even the fitness of captain Sanju Samson, who had to retire hurt because of a side strain. That pressure on them mid-order, Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer have got to step up for the Royals and stabilise their campaign.
However, Lucknow Super Giants too are coming off a surprising defeat to a pathetic CSK side. Combined with the pitch, they offered little for their hard-hitting batters, MS Dhoni’s vintage finish snatched the game away. LSG, however, stay in the top half of the table and have won four times from the seven games. It is not bad news for the visitors who saw captain Rishabh Pant return to form with a steady half century, and speedster Mayank Yadav being back in the squad after making a comeback from rehab. LSG can get a much-needed edge for their bowling attack once he returns.
Rajasthan, however, have to win despite their dying hopes, whereas Jaipur can afford this one defeat to get back into the continental battle, as both the teams look to get off to a winning start.
