India delivered an imposing show in the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and scored a nine-wicket victory over Australia with almost 12 overs remaining. But the best part of the game was surely the old-time chemistry between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli that brought to the minds of Australian fans the sheer experience and prowess that the two stalwarts offer to the game. The two of them made an invincible 168 run partnership, of which Rohit Sharma made a virtuosic 121* -his 33rd ODI century- and Virat Kohli made 74 with a comeback after two consecutive ducks.

The ongoing superiority of Rohit in the SCG was all too evident as it was his 60th ODI half-century and third half-century in this legendary ground, with two in a row hits. Kohli replaced Rohit when Shubman Gill was dismissed, and he initially struggled to settle down with several nervous deliveries before settling down and hitting three consecutive boundaries. The synergy between the two was frustrating to the bowlers of the Australian side, who wanted to send at least one of the star batsmen of India back home.

Australia had previously registered a relatively small total of 326, 56 by Matt Renshaw and 41 by Mitchell Marsh. The rest of the batting order did not fare well, particularly following a late collapse in front of the 40th over to enable India to dominate. Sharing of wickets by Indian bowlers was balanced, though Harshit Rana made a four-wicket haul, which gave him confidence in the series being played.

Kuldeep Yadav was brought back to the Indian team, as an injured Nitish Kumar Reddy was replaced, and so was Prasidh Krishna. Nathan Ellis came in as Australia lost the toss and decided to bat first.

When Shubman Gill and his men entered the SCG, they were keen not to suffer a sequence whitewash following two close defeats in Adelaide that left the series out of reach of India.
