New Delhi: The BCCI’s men’s senior selection committee, led by Ajith Agarkar, will convene in New Delhi on Monday to finalize the Asia Cup squad. Indian cricket team captain, Rohit Sharma, will also participate in this critical discussion. While nations like Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh have already unveiled their teams for the Asia Cup, the BCCI has delayed its announcement, primarily due to the injuries sustained by some of its key players. England and Australia have also publicized their provisional squads for the upcoming ODI World Cup.
Considering the norm followed by other cricketing nations, the BCCI may include more than the conventional 15 players in its squad. The absence of prominent players such as Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer, all of whom suffered significant injuries, has necessitated this potential deviation.
However, there’s a silver lining. Bumrah made a promising return during the T20I series against Ireland, even taking on the mantle of captaincy. As he continues to represent India in this series, the selection committee will closely monitor his performance and fitness levels.
Adding to the excitement, BCCI Secretary and ACC President Jay Shah recently revealed the Asia Cup’s itinerary on July 19. Cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the tournament’s commencement on August 30. A highlight will undoubtedly be the face-off between India and its long-standing rival, Pakistan, scheduled for September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka. This encounter promises to be a nail-biter and will captivate cricket lovers worldwide.
