India captain Rohit Sharma spoke to the media as questions linger over his possible absence for the initial two Tests against Australia later this year. While he did not specifically address the report one way or another, Rohit indicated that if push comes to shove, Jasprit Bumrah could be in line to take over leadership responsibilities from him. “Well, I want you to look at it this way – Bumrah has played a lot of cricket. I’ve played a lot with him. He understands the game well, and I believe he has the best attitude that any young man should have. When you start speaking to him, he understands the dynamics of the sport,” Rohit said in a press conference during India’s practice session, which ended due to rain.

Bumrah has been the vice-captain for the Indian short format team and has captaincy experience up to one Test match and a few T20s. However, Bumrah has relatively little leadership experience, yet Rohit has faith in his colleague if push comes to shove. The fast bowler was recently included in the vice-captaincy position for India’s forthcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand after the Indian team management did not announce any official vice-captain for recent tours of England and Bangladesh tours.

Recalling the discussion of leadership, this broke out, especially after some rumors that Rohit might possibly miss one or the other Test match, including the series opener against Australia or the second Test at the absolute least. An official privy to the developments at the BCCI said there have not been any formal discussions to remove Rohit, but he has let the board know that he may not be available for one of the initial test matches. It’s not clear now, but if the personal issue is sorted out before the series, Rohit might be available for all five Test matches. ”Further details would be available in the following days, another source revealed to the publication.”

Rohit has been an integral member of the Indian Test team and has recently featured in India’s home series against Bangladesh. India will now play with New Zealand.
