It has been a monumental achievement when Rohit Sharma has scaled the peak of the ICC Men’s ODI Batting Rankings becoming the first Indian to do so in the long and award-winning career he has had. Rohit is now the oldest player in ICC history to ever claim the No.1 position in any ranking in history, having surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar who is the last to secure the top spot in the Test rankings at the age of 38 years and 182 days in 2011.
A spectacular performance in the recent ODI series against Australia, which saw him top the charts with 202 runs in the three matches including a match winning century at the climax at the Sydney match that made India win the match 9-wickets to the nines, led Rohit to the top. The century was his 33rd in ODI and 50th in international cricket which only cemented his status as one of the greatest limited-overs batters of his generation.
The veteran opener build up a gain of 36 ICC rating points, as his total of 741 was 781 and overtook current India captain Shubman Gill who failed in the series with only 43 runs in three innings. After finishing first since the end of 2023, Gill has now dropped to position three with Rohit and Ibrahim Zadran of Afghanistan coming in behind him.
The success of Rohit Sharma is especially exceptional since it was achieved at the end of his global career, which highlights his persistence and versatility in formats. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, who has had a hard time gaining grounds at the start of the Australia series with two ducks in a row, scored a strong 74 not out in the last ODI yet fell to sixth position in the ranking. Shreyas Iyer, however, went on with his consistent climb, moving to the top 10 as he became the first to do so, and took the ninth position in the recent update of the ICC ODI rankings.
