Rishabh Pant, the cricketer who was bought for the highest price tag in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, has been appointed as the new captain of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the upcoming 2025 season. It was announced on Monday, officially sealing the news that Pant is vital for the side during the IPL season.
Pant, who set the record for becoming the costliest player when the mega auction was held in November of the previous year, was retained by LSG’s chief owner Sanjiv Goenka for a whopping ₹27 crore. This historic signing also made Pant the highest-earning player in the IPL auction. Since such an investment was made and Pant is one of the cricket’s prominent figures in the Indian cricket team, it could be expected that he would be assigned the captaincy of the team.
Although Pant had a poor IPL 2024 campaign at Delhi Capitals, finishing in sixth position, the integration of Pant to LSG is sure to fetch new energy. After the LSG ended in seventh place, they had faith that this 27-year-old would come up with a successful season for them.
Sanjiv Goenka conveyed lots of confidence in Pant as he said, “I bet Rishabh Pant will go down in the history of IPL as one of the greatest captains of the game ever. And in 10-12 years, you would read of his with MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.”
Lucknow has replaced KL Rahul with Pant, and the team is expecting the new captain to bring new meaning to the side’s mission. The talented wicketkeeper-batter has gone through outstanding personal and professional problems and wants to impress. Before joining the national team, Pant had a serious car accident in 2023, and he is still struggling to regain his fitness level. His unpleasant performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he managed less than 200 runs in a total of 10 innings, can definitely come back to haunt him in future test series; however, he has plenty of chances to find his grove back during the English limited overs series and Champions Trophy.
