The final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be decisive as it will see a new winner for the first time since 2016, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) meeting to decide the outcome. The eagerness to determine the 2023 champions will reach its climax on June 3 at Ahmedabad, because neither team has ever won the trophy.

Although many see RCB as underachievers because of their talented players over the years, they are making their fourth run in the IPL final this year. Their history includes finishing as the losing team in 2009, 2011, and 2016, against the Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. This time, they have appeared strong and self-assured, coming second in the group stage and defeating PBKS in the Qualifier to reach the final straight away.

PBKS, who were once Kings XI Punjab, are playing in their second IPL final after their previous one in 2014. Their last match was played in 2014 against the Kolkata Knight Riders, which they lost. Their only playoff run occurred in 2011 since the introduction; until now, this match did not exist. Under Iyer’s leadership, PBKS has made a remarkable change, with him becoming the first player to captain three teams in the IPL finals (Delhi Capitals, KKR, and PBKS).

Both teams had good games, each ending with nine wins, four losses, and one unfinished match. PBKS were successful against RCB in Bengaluru, but RCB came back in Qualifier 1 to beat them by only 101 runs by bowling them out. PBKS won their way to the final by beating Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2.
