In a formal statement, the former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has confirmed his retirement in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after a glorious 14-year career span in the world’s most-watched T20 tournament. Ashwin also announced on the social media platform X that he will be taking up a new challenge at other global T20 leagues.
Ashwin has bowled out 187 wickets in 221 games to make him the fourth-highest overall wicket-taker in the history of IPL. He played for several franchises in his career and included Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. Reemingly, his retirement was appropriate because he ended his IPL career in CSK, the team that he first played in 2009. The experienced spinner already notified the CSK management a month ago of his intentions to part ways, which displays responsible handling of the situation and is dedicated to the preparations of the team in the upcoming season.
This retirement by Ashwin in the IPL happens only nine months after he ended his international career. A week following the drawn test in the Gabba Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the 38-year-old announced his international retirement at a post-match press conference in the company of Rohit Sharma, his former Indian captain.
Although Ashwin performed in five franchises during his IPL career, his record with CSK is the most spectacular. He played a part in their IPL consecutive wins in 2010 and 2011. Among the most striking incidents of his profession was the exemplary manoeuvre by MS Dhoni in giving Ashwin the new ball during the Powerplay, which is a template that followed other captains in the league. Coming back to CSK in the mega-auction at ₹9.75 crore, Ashwin recorded seven wickets in 14 appearances in his last IPL season in 2025, adding to the total of 56 wickets that he has taken under the CSK jersey.
