Australia former captain Ricky Ponting has warned India coach Gautam Gambhir against making the task of selection of the teams too complicated, as India prepare to face a vital Super 8 match with Zimbabwe, in the 2026 T20 world cup. As India has already lost to South Africa in their first Super 8 match, the next game is virtually a must win game to keep their semi finals alive.
In an interview on The ICC Review, Ponting pointed out that it is better to trust the core group instead of worrying about the matches and little ways to change tactics. He proposed that India would pick their best XI that would fit the playing environment and have confidence in their overall quality.
These remarks by Ponting are in the context of a debate on whether Washington Sundar should have been included as a vice-captain in the last match in place of fellow vice-captain, Axar Patel. Although the management of the team explained the move as tactical and was said to have been influenced by opposition matches, Ponting warned the team not to make such moves determining the significant decisions. He observed that excessive planning of left-right formations or individual player combinations might sometimes cause needless stress and lead to disastrous effects on the balance of a team.
Ponting claims that a tournament such as T20 World Cup is hardly determined by one change of selection. He emphasized on the importance of captaincy choices especially how to use the bowlers most effectively at critical stages than small changes in the lineup.
In a preview of the Zimbabwe confrontation, Ponting indicated that India would think of recalling Axar Patel in the squad and also look at bringing in Kuldeep Yadav to bolster their spin attack. Although this would slightly reduce the batting line, he argued that the top order of the Indian team must be strong enough to take the burden.
