Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament at the Dr. Sampurnanand Sports Stadium in Varanasi on Sunday. More than 1,000 players will participate in the tournament, which that will run from January 4th to 11th. Fifty-eight teams representing various states and institutions will compete for the title.
Inaugurating the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament in Varanasi today via video conferencing, Mr Modi said that India is strongly bidding to host the 2036 Olympics. He said that his government has brought many changes and reforms in the field of sports, like the National Sports Governance Act and Khelo Bharat Niti 2025.
The Prime Minister said that the sports model of the country is now athlete centric that is why there is a significant increase in the success of the sports persons after 2014.
Under the captaincy of Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the Indian Under-19 cricket team started with a win. In the first ODI against South Africa, Team India won by 25 runs using the Duckworth-Lewis system. India Under-19 scored 301 and restricted the hosts to 148 in 27.4 overs in a rain-affected match. This gave Team India a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Players like Ayush Mhatre and Vihaan Malhotra were not playing in the series. Consequently, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was appointed captain. He failed to make much of an impact with the bat, scoring 11 runs off 12 balls. However, under his captaincy, the team managed to win. India A’s second match is on January 5th.
Batting first, the India Under-19 team scored 301 runs. Harvansh Pangalia top-scored with 93 runs, while R Ambrish made 65 runs. Kanishk Chauhan (32), Khilan Patel (26), Vedant Trivedi (21), and Abhigyan Kundu (21) also played crucial innings, helping India cross the 300-run mark. Chasing the target, the South African batsmen also batted well, but wickets fell at regular intervals. Opener Jorich van Schalkwyk remained unbeaten on 60 runs. He found a good partner in Arman Manek (46). The two added 86 runs for the fourth wicket. However, the team could not reach the Duckworth-Lewis system’s target of 174 runs in 27.4 overs. Deepesh Devendran took two wickets for the India Under-19 team.
