Pakistan’s men’s cricket team has suffered a lot of losses, and therefore the Champions Trophy 2025 was a landmark event for Pakistan. However, the historical event was just a financial disaster for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which lost 85 per cent after spending INR 869 crore hosting just one completed home match of the tournament.
Huge Expenditure, Minimal Returns
Pakistan Cricket Board spent over one hundred per cent more than what was sanctioned on the infrastructure, with PKR 18 billion (approx. $58 million) for refurbishing Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Karachi stadiums, according to reports. Other than event preparations, $40 million was also allocated to an additional fund. All was not lost; the PCB was able to recover $6 million from hosting fees, ticket sales, and sponsorships, but that left $85 million in the red.
For Pakistan, the only home game completed in the tournament was against New Zealand at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Bangladesh’s second match against the team was washed out before the toss. The financial blow continued with the same fate suffered by two out of the remaining eight matches held in Pakistan.
Players Face Severe Budget Cuts
In fact, match fees in the National T20 Championship have been cut by 90 per cent, and reserve player payments have been reduced by 87.5 per cent. Even as PCB administrators pocketed millions of salaries, the players were played down in five-star hotel accommodations to budget ones.
The prominent news agency reported that PCB, with Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s intervention, previously secretly cut domestic match pays to as little ₹10,000 from ₹40,000. No official amount has been announced yet. However, the amount seems to have been revised from ₹40,000 to ₹30,000 per match, which is still ₹10,000 less than what was given last year.
