In the Paris Olympics 2024, Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain was losing her match to Chinese opponent Li Qian in the women’s 75kg quarter-final on day nine. This loss effectively means the curtains have been drawn on India’s boxing in the current Olympics, and it has been a tough event for the Indian boxing team.
On the other end of the spectrum, India’s men’s hockey team gave a tailor-made to Great Britain in the quarter-final match. In a regular match, the two teams finished the match 1-1, but in penalties, the team emerged as the winner 4-2 and thus qualified for the semi-final stages, thus continuing the fight of the India hockey team.
In shooting, for men’s 25m rapid pistol qualification Stage 1, Vijayveer Singh ranked 5th, and Anish ranked 7th. It goes on to Stage 2 later, and Indian shooters are also taking part in the women’s skeet trials.
The athletics arena recorded varying outcomes; Parul Chaudhary performed poorly in the women’s 3000m steeple chase round one, where she came eighth and was ejected from round two. Jeswin Aldrin is expected to participate in the qualification event for the men’s long jump category.
Matches to be held on the 9th of the day include a boxing match in the flyweight category between Lovlina Borgohain and Li Qian and a badminton semi-final match in men’s singles between Lakshya Sen and Victor Axelsen of Denmark. If any Indian shuttler has to bring a medal in badminton, then it has to be Sen, as India does not have any other ace players in the Paris Olympics. But unfortunately, Lakshya Sen lost in the semi final but still has the chance of winning the bronze.
The Indian contingent, in particular, continues to be set back at the end of the week with a spate of disappointments that was experienced today, on the 8th day. Teen shooter Manu Bhaker was fourth in the women’s 25m pistol and locked the second position before dropping down momentarily. Deepika Kumari was in archery and lost to Nam Suhyeon of South Korea in the women’s quarter-final, while Bhajan Kaur also bowed out in the 1/8 elimination round.
In the same event at Paris Olympics, boxer Nishant Dev also could not achieve victory in the 71kg quarter-final match against Mexico’s Marco Verde. Nethra Kumanan and Vishnu Saravanan ended up 24th and 23rd, respectively, on the basis of their scores in six races of their categories.
