Day 4 (1 September) at the Paris Paralympics 2024 brought more success for the Indian contingent in the form of a couple of medals and the promise of many more. Not only did India win two more medals, both in track and field events, to take their overall tally to seven and remain inside the top-30 on the medal table, they also confirmed at least three more in badminton.
Nishad Kumar produced a brilliant performance to clinch a silver medal in men’s high jump T47 event at the Paris Paralympics, thus taking India’s overall medal tally to 7. This was also India’s second medal on the Sunday.
“Congrats to @nishad_hj for his remarkable achievement in winning a Silver medal in the Men’s High Jump T47 event at the #Paralympics2024! He has shown us all that with passion and determination, everything is possible. India is elated”, wrote Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X.
Nishad’s highest jump at the event was 2.04m which was also his season’s best. USA’s Roderick Townsend won the gold medal with a highest jump of 2.12m, while Georgii Margiev, representing the Neutral Paralympic Athletes, took the bronze medal at 2.00m.
Meanwhile, Preeti Pal created history as she became the first-ever Indian woman track and field athlete to win two medals at the Paralympics.
“A historic achievement by Preeti Pal, as she wins her second medal in the same edition of the #Paralympics2024 with a Bronze in the Women’s 200m T35 event! She is an inspiration for the people of India. Her dedication is truly remarkable”, wrote Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X.
India could have won a medal in archery, but ended up missing it by a whisker. It was a similar case in shot put, but once again was not to be.
Additionally, it was a disappointing day for double Paralympic gold medallist Avani Lekhara as she finished 11th in the qualifying round of the mixed 10m air rifle prone event, failing to reach the final in the process.
